The first time I saw slipstreaming in action with professional cyclists, I was in awe. The competitors were riding inches away from each other; when the lead rider would swerve left or right, the pursuers would immediately follow suit. The physics behind what appears on the surface to be sheer daredevil antics are quite solid: the cyclists riding directly behind the leader are benefitting from reduced air and wind resistance. On a larger scale, a peloton (the French term for a pack of riders) benefits multiple riders whoare behind the leaders of the pack. While riding so close to other riders carries great risk of colliding, that risk is outweighed by the benefit of preserving one’s energy.Slipstream was inspired by the love of cycling shared by Haley Hoops, horn, and Stephen Ahearn, clarinet, for whom the piece was commissioned. They are drawn to cycling for the adventure of it, to discover new places, and to meet new people. Haley also expressed her enjoyment of taking solo bike rides. Additionally, I found great inspiration in watching the daily highlight videos of the three-week 2020 Tour de France, which happened to be taking place while I composed Slipstream. The piece opens with The Horizon Beckons. A cyclist hears an enticing call emanating from the mountains, then the cyclist starts pedaling towards the mountains in search of adventure. Riding Solo, the second movement, explores the quiet of riding alone, the beauty of the landscape, and the shifting of the light and clouds, all while we hear the bike’s wheels in constant motion. Adrenaline Rush, the third and final movement, depicts the heat of competition. We hear the constant jockeying of cyclists within a peloton as they slipstream with each other and move with the wind. At the very end of the movement, we hear sprinters race for the finish line with everything they have left in their legs.

Hymns revisited. Hymns reimagined. Hymns reinvented. Hymns relived. Hymns rewritten. At this point we've seen everything done with hymns that we can possibly think of. And you may be saying the last thing you want or need is another book of hymns. And some might be inclined to agree. Except...What if, instead of working so hard to change them or improve them, we focus on revealing the true nature, power, and majesty of our favorite hymns? Rather, to be true to them, and frame them in their best light by rediscovering a fresh appreciation of their well-deserved place in our houses of worship. Let our choirs raise their voices in unbridled passion, fed by the awe-inspiring, rich, theological and doctrinal truths buried deep within these tremendous songs of the Faith. Let our spirits rise with the soaring melodies, and once again give voice to our praise of the immortal, invisible, only-wise God! And, more than anything else, let us rediscover the joy that comes when we encourage our congregations to raise our joys and triumphs high, as together the Church proclaims, Then Sings My Soul, to the greatness of our God.While each great arrangement in this book stands alone, Then Sings My Soul is designed to be presented as a through-composed worship service of hymns, scripture, and inspirational readings for Choir, Congregation, and Worship Leaders, created and orchestrated by Cliff Duren. DVD Accompaniment Track, Orchestration, and Stem Mixes available.

The text for When I Grow Up first came to me while I was teaching in Houston, Texas. I noticed that my students were becoming more and more concerned about what steps they had to take as students to secure a future for themselves decades ahead. Young people are finding themselves having to make lifelong decisions at a time where they are still in a season of exploration and wonderment. I then asked myself, What happened to discovery through play and imagination? With the help of one of my former and forever choir students, Monica Juarez, we took my original text and created illustrations of a young Coty in New Orleans, Louisiana imagining, in real time, all of the things that she could be! It was important to me that the images were of real things that I had seen growing up every day. That we are limitless and that it's only in the pressures of growing up that we can lose our creativity, I hope this text allows both singers and conductor to let their imagination take the lead and shape the journey ahead!Sing with JOY!—Coty Occasionally, when I get to visit with young people, I’ll ask, Has anyone ever asked you want to be when you grow up? All the hands go up. Children say yes, and then proceed to tell me what they want to be when they grow up. So, then I ask a follow-up question, Why on earth do you have to wait until you’re a grown-up to be somebody?!When I first read through Coty’s text, I was so moved by how clear and beautiful that message of empowerment shines through:I want to live, and that begins now. I want to be happy. And I refuse to wait until I grow up.I also was struck by her imaginative use of the four classical elements—air, water, fire, and earth—to bring us on a journey of discovery and wonder.I’ve tried my best to, not so much set Coty’s words to a tune, as to go along with her on the journey and see what music would emerge. And I’m so happy you’ve joined us on the journey, too.Welcome!—Mark.

Includes book, DVD, and unique code to access DVD online. The ultimate goal of Movement Exploration, one of the eight parts of John Feierabend’s First Steps in Music curriculum, is to use the body to appropriately demonstrate the expressiveness of the music. Experiencing various movements with accompanying music helps children develop lifelong sensitivities toward the expressiveness—or the “art part”—of music. There is no better vehicle for this than Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker. The music and the story come alive when children are invited to actively participate, to become each character, and to respond expressively to their signature music. At the same time, each theme offers an opportunity to expand students’ creative movement vocabulary. Lillie Feierabend has presented The Nutcracker for over twenty years to the delight of her entire school community. Join her as she guides the first, second, and third grade students of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir in dancing each character and discovering the delight of moving expressively and musically to the Movement Exploration themes. Also included on this DVD: A voiceover track with John and Lillie Feierabend discussing each component of Movement Exploration Complete storyline with Movement Exploration themes and implementation ideas Parent engagement as they dance with their children Lillie Feierabend is known for her work with young children and instilling a love of music within them. She has been a general music teacher in Connecticut for thirty years and a director of the Connecticut Children’s Chorus for seventeen. She is a frequent clinician at local, state, national, and international conferences, speaking on many aspects of early childhood music. Dr. John Feierabend is considered one of the leading authorities on child development in music and movement. He is a Professor Emeritus and former Director of Music Education at the University of Hartford’s The Hartt School and is a past President of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE).
